Brueghel & Van Balen, artistes & complices
En 2025, pour le 400e anniversaire de sa mort, le musée célèbre l’un des plus grands peintres anversois du 17e siècle, Jan I Brueghel, en mettant en lumière sa collaboration avec Hendrick van Balen.
Musée départemental de Flandre
Dernier fils du grand Pieter Bruegel l’Ancien, Jan I Brueghel marque son temps grâce à un sens de la couleur et à une touche miniaturiste hors du commun. Spécialiste des paysages, des fleurs, des fruits et des animaux, il s’adjoint souvent les compétences d’autres peintres, chargés de représenter les figures.
Son plus grand collaborateur, après Rubens, est Hendrick van Balen. Cet artiste aujourd’hui méconnu eut pourtant une brillante carrière. Son corpus, pluriel, se compose aussi bien d’impressionnants retables d’églises que de tableaux plus intimistes prenant pour sujet la mythologie ou la Bible. Une amitié étroite unit les trois hommes, au point qu’à la mort de Brueghel, Van Balen et Rubens sont nommés co-tuteurs de ses enfants.
